Activists dye Buckingham Palace fountains ‘blood’ red to protest hunting and animal agriculture

One of London’s most popular tourist destinations, Buckingham Palace fountains, has been dyed blood red in a striking display by animal activists from Animal Rebellion, a branch of Extinction Rebellion.

The group is acting in protest against a recent report that revealed Scottish ministers were secretly lobbied by the Queen’s lawyers to change a draft law to exempt her private land from a major initiative to cut carbon emissions.

The royal family has come under fire from animal activists many times over the years for their support of blood sports such as hunting, horse racing and the fur trade.

Keen to make an eye-catching statement to force passers-by to take notice, activists dyed the water red and daubed red pet across the Buckingham Palace fountains.

They also displayed banners with the statement ‘A Royal Blood Bath’ to ‘symbolise the royal families crimes against animals and our planet.’

Sharing live updates on social media, Animal Rebellion wrote: “The fountains remain blood red and we hope that passersby and those inside the palace continue to look out and be reminded of the consequences of their choices and what needs to change to avoid a catastrophic future.”

‘Time for a new system’

Defending their actions in a statement sent to Vegan Food & Living, Harley McDonald-Eckersall, a spokesperson for Animal Rebellion said: “The crown estate is the biggest landowner in the UK and they choose to use this land for animal agriculture and hunting, which not only decimate our environment but cause the deaths of millions of lives every year.

“It’s time for a new system based on justice and compassion and the royal family should be leading the way.

“Crown land should be used to grow healthy, nutritious food for all and to provide homes for the animals we share this country with,” McDonald-Eckersall added.

Arrests made

Five of the activists taking part in the demonstration have been arrest by police.

Met Police said: “A number of activists have vandalised the Victoria Memorial water feature outside Buckingham Palace. We are on scene and arrests have been made. The suspects are being taken to custody.”
