Potential drawbacks to going to failure with pretty much every exercise? : veganfitness


Hello! 4 years vegan, lifting on and off for about 8. About 4 months ago I decided to really go hard into working out, tracking protein and calories etc. I’ve never been that strong and my goal is really to grow beyond any baseline strength I’ve had up until this point.

For some context: 26/m – 149lbs – 5′ 11″

The basic structure for my workouts has been a PPL split, starting at 6-8 reps per set at 3-4 sets going to failure until I can fully complete all sets, then adding a rep to each set that next week and so on until I hit 10-12 reps per set, going up in weight and starting again from 6-8 reps. The exception has been squat/bench/deadlift which I’ve been doing at 5×5 which just feels comfortable for me for those heavier compound lifts.

This method along with a better diet has given me gains that I’ve never been able to achieve before, but I’ve noticed the last few weeks my progress has been much slower and my overall fatigue between workouts has increased. Should I be pushing myself to failure this consistently? Should I be doing periodic rest weeks? I’m at the point of seriousness with lifting that I really want to be sure I’m not setting myself up for injury in the future and that I can have sustainable strength gains. I guess it is just in my nature always push myself to physical and mental limits as I do so in other parts of my life but having some sort of injury long term is def not a position I’d like to find myself in.
